Psychoactive substances ...

Are all those that have an impact on the central nervous system (CNS) and modify its operation. Psychoactive substance is a more accurate word than "drug", since the latter includes properly formulated drugs, and do not necessarily affect the central nervous system.

Psychoactive drugs are divided into four groups:

Depressants: decrease the level of functioning of the central nervous system (CNS). Withdrawal syndrome after prolonged use of CNS depressants may cause complications. Within this group are:

-Alcohol
-Narcotics (opium, morphine and heroin)
-Inhalants (gasoline, acetone, glue)









Stimulants are substances which increase psychological acuity and physical ability. Used by athletes to better support the effort to stay awake students or people who use alcohol or sleeping pills to counteract these effects. Major stimulants are:

Cocaine
The bazuco
Amphetamines
Caffeine.






Hallucinogenic substances which have the ability to alter the perception. Most of them are of plant origin, but for about 30 years occur in industrialized countries. Some hallucinogens are:

-The magic mushroom
-The YAHE (product of the mixture of various plants found in the-jungles of Colombia)
-LSD (is short for "lysergic acid" extracted from a fungus of rye)
- Peyote







Mixed substances: combined effects, ie may slow or speed the performance level of the central nervous system. Within this group are:
-Marijuana
-The Rapture




Regular use of different psychoactive substances, alter the functioning of the body, mood, behavior, and therefore the relationship with the external world.
